The 2-Minute Rule for Gambling

The recent surge in street protests against perceived corruption within the Gambling Commission has once again revealed the futility of elected leaders and their inability to be representative of the people. The Gambling Commission was established in the past as an independent administrative entity to oversee Jordan’s sports industry. Its goal was to safeguard the interests of gamblers and to promote the expansion of casinos in Jordan. However, in recent years it has increasingly become a political instrument used to further marginalize and restrict the population.

More than 2,100 people protested against corruption in a case that involved the high-rolling Amman casino. Thousands more took part in a second protest organized by the Muslim opposition in Amman, who also demanded the resignation of the Prime Minister Ali Makhsoos and the removal of the current government. The Al Qaeda-linked Islamic Action Center in Amman hosted the largest amount of protestors. They held banners that read, “The people want to stop corruption in Gambling.” Some of them carried placards featuring images of Ali Baba, the former King of Jordan who is currently the Gambling Commission chairman.

Recently Ali Makhsoos was quoted as saying that he did not have plans of stepping down and would continue to be the head of the Gambling Commission until his term expires at the end this year. He justification for his decision was that he was the person who decided to remain in the job despite public demands for him to step down. Naturally there are many people who believe that the accusations levelled against him are politically motivated and reflect an attempt to undermine Jordan’s fragile democratic system. Many of those who believe that the charges are politically motivated base their views on the fact that Makhsoos is an active member of the minority National Guard that is protecting the regime. In addition to this accusation many view the Gambling Commission as a big business lobbying organization, trying to increase the number of casinos in Jordan and expand its own sector of the economy.

Many of the locals I spoke to were not concerned about the political aspects of it all and instead focused on their dislike of Makhsoos and the way the Gaming Commission was run. One resident said that Makhsoos would often enter her hotel room while she was at the casino to take money. Another resident said that before he stole her money, the Gaming Commission was letting her pay him in cash. It appears that the residents believe that all the allegations against Makhsoos are true, but are reluctant to make a statement because they fear what they could be. They will therefore remain silent and let the Gaming Commission do what it pleases.

The current situation in Jordan is making it difficult for those who manage the country’s casinos. They are under threat from members of the Al Qaeda linked Islamic Party as well as other groups believed to be backed by Osama Bin Laden. Anyone who is involved in the gambling industry in Jordan is also in danger. The tourism industry will suffer , and as a result, the livelihoods and jobs of the people in Jordan.

There is also a concern regarding the future of slot machines that are currently operating in Jordan. Most of these casinos are operated by foreign companies including those from India and Ireland. They are operated from gambling casinos or hotels. Many of these casinos do not have direct affiliation with the Jordan Lottery Commission or the Al Qaeda linked groups.

These illegal casinos and their affiliates have taken over the slot machines and betting areas of many of the nation’s hotels and motels. They charge patrons massive fees and their operations are not regulated at all. This allows an illegal industry to manage one of the biggest industries of the country. This is causing millions of dollars to be lost in tax revenue every year to the private sector, the government sector, and native American gaming communities.

The native American casinos earn money by processing passports and traveler’s visas before the player makes their way home. These businesses also process visitor’s visas and passports for tourists visiting the country. Gambling in the form of video poker is a major source of revenue for these companies. Gambling on slots and video poker is particularly profitable for native American casinos in this troubled economy. This kind of business is vital for many of these companies.
