Recently, the Office of the United Nations Secretary General’s Envoy for Youth issued a call to action to increase the participation of women who are young in politics. Young women comprise less than one percent of parliamentarians today, which is a significant setback for their valuable contributions to the future generation. What can young women do about this trend? Here are some examples. Let’s take a closer glance. In short, women can make a difference in the world of politics by being involved in public debates, taking leadership roles, and taking responsibility for their country.
Gender analysis can assist policymakers and advocates understand why women aren’t represented in the political leadership. In some countries, the primary reason for inequality isn’t patriarchal dynamics , but rather the intersection of multiple vectors of social exclusion and political inequality. It’s not entirely clear whether these factors are the primary reason for inequality. It is crucial to prioritise women’s leadership in politics if we want attain equality in politics.
The Women in Parliament Summit (WPL) brings together female politicians from around the world to engage in a global discussion. These events are held each quarter and reflect the views and opinions of women in decision-making positions. For the inaugural WPL Summit, held in the European Parliament in 2013, the theme was “Advancing Society.” The participants included Prime Ministers from Norway, Finland, and Malta as well as Mari Kiviniemi, Deputy Secretary General of the OECD.
Both the global and national governments must encourage policies and practices that promote women’s leadership in politics. These strategies shouldn’t be founded on outdated gender stereotypes. Instead, they should look at the complicated relationship between women’s political inclusion and the democratic process. Based on previous initiatives U.S. policymakers can promote gender equality by incorporating gender considerations into all their policies. The more social impact is, the more women will be included in the political process.
This trend is not uncommon in the United States. In 2018, women were elected as head of state, ministers, and parliamentarians. This trend continues with female elected leaders in the U.S. President Joe Biden has made history by naming the first female vice president. Biden’s administration has also appointed more women to cabinet positions than any previous president. It’s not a coincidence that women have made huge strides in the field of political leadership. In spite of this, more women are in the executive branches of our country than ever before.
In addition to political participation, IRI works to increase women’s influence in society. It also promotes gender equity through changes in the perceptions men have of women. Political change is not possible without social change. If these two factors are accompanied by the political change that women’s representation in politics is guaranteed. Therefore, it is vital to take action to promote gender equality in politics. Additionally, IRI promotes inclusive policies, gender equity, and equal representation in all fields.
The United Nations established a Democracy Cohort for women as a result of these achievements. The group will be focused on women’s political empowerment. The Democracy Cohort will be working closely with women leaders to assist them in implementing reforms, and to measure the progress they have made towards achieving their commitments. This cohort has been endorsed by the United Nations and will continue to collaborate with them during the Summit for Democracy’s Year of Action.
In China, women’s political representation has dropped from 25 percent in 1975 to 10.9 percent in 2018. In 2002, the proportion of women elected as county and city mayors and directors fell below 10 percent. The reasons behind these results are attributed to the patriarchal structure, the legacy of socialism, and patriarchal structures. This study also emphasizes the importance of empowering women in a patriarchal society.
The majority of Americans believe that women who hold leadership posts in the United States are better than men in certain fields. For example, seventy-one percent of women believe that female politicians are more compassionate and understanding than their male counterparts. A majority of Americans believe that women politicians are more adept in handling healthcare issues than men. However when it comes to the economy, women are thought to be more skilled in dealing with key policy issues.
Despite these issues however, many women believe that voters don’t want to elect women to high post. They tend to blame gender discrimination and unequal expectations as the root causes of women’s political underrepresentation in the political arena. However, this view is echoed by many men. A third of male political leaders mention gender discrimination as the primary reason behind the absence of women in political leadership. Why is there so many women in leadership positions?
