Back Pain Relief – My Story

The whole process has turned me into a person like a reformed smoker! I know how simple it is (now!) to look after my back and the fine line that exists between avoiding surgery and needing surgery. For example, I very rarely bend over to pick up things off the ground I always squat – it has become a habit.

I was about to get off the bed when she told me to relax as that was just the start of the day’s events. ‘ I have to be sure you can urinate satisfactorily before I let you go” she said. It was something that I hadn’t thought about. My bladder had been traumatised and had to learn to operate on its own again.

One of the bags was an overnight bag bag where urine is drained from the bladder. This bag fills automatically as the bladder drains and the nursing staff replace it when needed. The other bag can be detached from the overnight bag and is carried around with you, however for the time being I was going nowhere.

Physical therapies – these are the activities that involve the stretching and strengthening of the muscles of the spine where the pains emanate. A physiotherapist tokai is usually employed to carry out this activity.

Standing tall relax your shoulders – this may give you the feeling that you have “shrugged” your shoulders, that is, stooped a bit, but if you look in a mirror you haven’t.

Eventually this pain started affecting other limbs as well, especially my elbows. I now have permanent damage from my gout episodes, and there was no need for this to happen! Stupid doctors missed the fact that I had gout, even though I had all the risk factors… Male, middle-aged, overweight, and had previously had gout.

After six days in hospital I was allowed to go home. One of my sons called for me and I gingerly made my way out of the hospital. I was greeted by fresh air and sunshine. I thought of the many who enter hospital never to leave. Again I was thankful.
